Preparing for Birth in Winnipeg: 5 Must-Know Facts for Every Expecting Mom|Winnipeg Newborn Photographer
Giving birth is one of the most significant moments of your life, and it can feel like an overwhelming mix of emotions and can often turn out nothing as you pictured. I’ve been there and it’s given me a whole new respect for what birth really is. As a Winnipeg newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of hearing so many birth stories. From unexpected home births in the tub with no one but the parents present(gasp) to planned C-sections where everything went as expected... no two births are the same. These points aren’t meant to overwhelm you, but to help you feel a little more prepared than I was. If I could sit across from you with a warm tea and share what I’ve learned, this is what I’d tell you.
1. Birth may not go as planned
I had hopes for how mine would look… but it ended up going in a completely different direction and while that was hard at the time, what matters most is that I ended up with a healthy, beautiful baby boy. If I could do it again, I’d ask more questions—What happens if labor stalls? What if baby needs help right away? What if I change my mind about pain relief? Knowing your options ahead of time gives you confidence, even when plans shift. Talk through possible "plan B" scenarios with your care provider so you're not caught off guard. The more prepared you are for the unexpected, the easier it will be to adjust when things shift.
2. Winnipeg has more birth options than you might think
Most people think "hospital" and that’s it—but you actually have choices. If you’re wanting a more home-like setting with midwife care, check out the Birth Centre on St. Mary’s Road. It's cozy, calming, and completely different from a clinical room. If you’re delivering in a hospital, both St. Boniface and Health Sciences Centre have amazing teams and different approaches to birth—You can totally make the space your own, even in a hospital. Some moms bring things like a diffuser with their favorite essential oils, or a playlist that helps them feel calm and grounded. Don’t be shy to ask your care provider what’s allowed—those little touches can make a big difference.
3. Comfort during labor isn’t just about pain relief
Simple things made a big difference for me: a warm shower, someone rubbing my shoulders, dim lights, and my doula reminding me to breathe. Winnipeg has some amazing doulas if you want that extra layer of support which I highly recommend. (Check out this post where I interviewed my amazing doula) They’re not just for natural births—they support any birth plan and can help you feel calm and in control. I didn't realize how much just having someone quietly in my corner would matter.
4. Postpartum recovery deserves as much prep as birth
I was so thankful to have family bring meals and check in on me—not just the baby. I had also been told to prep a few things ahead of time, like comfy clothes, herbal teas, and padsicles (frozen pads with witch hazel and aloe vera). They were such a relief those first few days! You can find recipes for postpartum teas or padsicles online and make a small stash before baby comes. Setting up even a few of these supports ahead of time makes a big difference.
5. Postpartum Emotions Are Real-and you don’t have to do it alone
The first few days (and weeks) can feel like a fog. Joy, fear, love, tears… sometimes all in one hour. That’s normal. If something doesn’t feel quite right emotionally, you don’t have to tough it out. There’s help, and you’re not alone, mama. In Winnipeg, a public health nurse will usually call you after baby is born, and they can even come to your home to check in—whether it’s for nursing support or just to see how you're doing emotionally. Don’t be afraid to reach out—you deserve to feel supported, too.
Remember, mama, you don’t need to have it all figured out right away. Each step in this journey is yours, and no matter how you give birth or how your postpartum experience unfolds, it’s valid and beautiful. Take things one day at a time, and don't be afraid to ask for help. You’ve got this.
